The International Festival of Literature and Translation of Iaşi(FILIT) is launching its call for applications for the programme FILIT residencies for foreign translators. This year as well six foreign translators of Romanian literature will receive within the programme reimbursement of travel costs, accommodation for a month and a lump sum of money.The initiative belongs to the National Museum of Romanian Literature in Iaşi, with the support of the Ipoteşti Memorial – Mihai Eminescu National Study Centre, the County Centre for Culture in Bistrița-Năsăud, the Concert Society in Bistrița, Roman City Hall, as well as by two business partners from Brăila and Iaşi.
The programme aims to develop regional cultural cooperation, in order to promote literary heritage and contemporary works on the international scene, thus encouraging the mobility of professional translators and supporting their projects.
The residences, aimed at those who translate from Romanian into a foreign language, are organised in close connection with symbolic landmarks and outstanding names in Romanian literature: Mihai Eminescu (Ipoteşti), members of Junimea (Iaşi), George Coșbuc and Liviu Rebreanu (Bistrița-Năsăud county), Panait Istrati and Mihail Sebastian (Brăila), M. Blecher (Roman).
Particular attention will be given to projects involving writers represented in the network of literary museums in Iaşi, as well as in the area of activity of the partner institutions.
The structure of residencies is the following:
- 2 FILIT residencies, at the National Museum of Romanian Literature and with a business partner, in Iaşi;
- 1 FILIT residency at the Ipoteşti Memorial, Botoşani, Mihai Eminescu commune, Ipoteşti;
- 1 FILIT residency in Bistrița;
- 1 FILIT residency in Roman;
- 1 FILIT residency in Brăila.
Each residency lasts 30 days, in the period 1 July – 31 October 2019, in an interval chosen by the translator who receives the residency. The residency programme will cover travel costs (return ticket), 30 days of accommodation, as well as a lump sum of 2,000 lei.
The application file must include the following documents in Romanian:
- application form, available as an electronic file on the website www.muzeulliteraturiiiasi.ro ;
- a copy of his/her personal ID;
- a letter of recommendation from a cultural personality in Romania;
- the name of the translation project and a brief description (max. 2000 characters);
- curriculum vitae;
- list of published translations.
The beneficiaries of the residency have the obligation to translate 20 pages of text from the works of a Romanian author whose name is connected to one of the museums within the National Museum of Romanian Literature in Iaşi or to the partners’ activity. Moreover, whenever the translation is published, a note must mention that the text has been translated with the support of the FILIT residencies for foreign translators.
The application interval is 5 April – 15 May 2019, and the files must be sent in electronic form to the address muzeul.literaturii@gmail.com. The applications will be assessed in the interval 16-17 May 2019, and the results will be announced on 17 May 2019.
