World-renowned writers have confirmed their participation at the second edition of the International Festival of Literature and Translation (FILIT), which will take place this year between 1-5 October. Herta Müller, the Nobel prize winner for Literature, David Lodge, one of the most cherished and appreciated novelists in the world – a classic of British literature, Norman Manea and Mircea Cărtărescu, themselves Nobel prize favourites, will meet with the their readers in Iași, Romania this fall.
The number of writers who have accepted to take part in FILIT grows larger day by day and so we are able to go public with some of these names: Nobel Prize winner for Literature Herta Müller will come to Iasi, later this year. In 2013, shortly before the start of the first edition of the festival, the writer had to undergo emergency surgery and thus cancelled all her scheduled events until the end of that year. Nominated three times before, Herta Müller was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on December 8, 2009 for “the density of her poetry and the sincerity of her prose aptly used to describe the universe of the deracinated.” She is the twelfth female writer to be awarded the prize.
Reputed novelist, playwright and screen player, David Lodge, is one of the most popular foreign writers in Romania, being highly appreciated both by critics and the general public alike. Considered by many among the last classics of English literature, his acceptance to participate at FILIT is even more important as his public appearances at literary festivals have decreased considerably in recent years. This is David Lodge’s first visit to Romania.
Following is the list of some of the writers that will participate at FILIT this year:
Foreign writers: Herta Müller (Germany), David Lodge (Great Britain), Sahar Delijani (Iran, currently lives in Italy), Romain Puertolas (France), Monika Peetz (Germany), Care Santos (Catalonia, Spain), Edward Hirsch (USA).
Romanian writers: Mircea Cărtărescu, Norman Manea, Vasile Ernu, Radu Aldulescu, Lavinia Branişte, Marta Petreu, George Bălăiţă, Ana Maria Sandu, Ioana Nicolaie, Ion Vianu, Alexandru Vlad, Bogdan Suceavă, Matei Vişniec, Magda Cârneci, Simona Sora, Andrei Ruse.
Translators: Marily Le Nir (France), Inger Johansson (Sweden), Lora Nenkovska (Bulgaria).
The FILIT team is in permanent contact with authors, editors and literary agents so that the festival should attract the participation of some of the best writers in Romanian and international literatures. Until the end of September, the list will be continuously updated.
This year, the second edition of FILIT will take place between 1-5 October and will bring to Iasi over 300 guests, benefiting from the support of numerous cultural institutions both national and international.
FILIT is an annually-based project run by the Iași County Council and the Museum of Romanian Literature, Iași.
