The 10th edition of the FILIT Workshops for translators, organized by the Iași National Museum of Romanian Literature in collaboration with the Ipotești Memorial – Mihai Eminescu National Center for Studies, will take place in September 1-8, 2024.

For ten years, the workshops have provided a constant framework for dialogue, debates and professional training for translators of Romanian literature into a foreign language. Launched in 2015 in Ipotești, this edition returns to the in-person format after a period of several years (2020-2023) during which the meetings were held online.

Participants from ten countries have been selected for this edition: Fernando Klabin (Brazil), Hristo Boev and Stilyan Deyanov (Bulgaria), Iris Reinald (France), Jan Cornelius (Germany), Giada Chetti (Italy), Lavinia Ienceanu (Romania), Edith Negulici (Romania), Eva Kenderessy (Slovakia), Monica Cure (USA/Romania), Andrew Davidson-Novosivschei (USA/Romania), Joanna Kornaś-Warwas (Poland), Raluca Ciortea (Uruguay/Romania).

Together with the guest lecturers, the translators will reflect on the interpretation and translation into different languages of classic and contemporary texts from Romanian literature and discuss strategies for promoting Romanian literature abroad in the context of today’s changing and challenging global world.

A working session coordinated by the critic and professor Doris Mironescu will focus on the translation of Eminescu’s poem Melancolie, while the history of religions researcher and specialist Eugen Ciurtin will give a lecture with the title Notes on and for translators into and from Romanian.

Translators Joanna Kornaś-Warwas (Poland) and Eva Kenderessy (Slovakia) will moderate the round table Translators of Romanian literature on the international book market, and Monica Cure (USA/Romania), also a translator, will lead a collective dialogue on the professionalization of the translation domain.

This year’s Workshop program is enriched with a hybrid approach, including two online meetings in the series Translators and Writers in Dialogue*, moderated by Monica Joița, Minister-Counsellor at the Diplomatic Archives of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The first meeting will feature the Italian translator Roberto Merlo and the critic and professor Doris Mironescu, with a provocative topic: Translating the classics today.

The second meeting, with the title Writer-translator partnership. Advantages and risks, will feature Marian Ochoa de Eribe, a translator from Spain, and Gabriela Adameșteanu, a Romanian writer.

FILIT Workshops for translators is one of the initiatives of the Iași National Museum of Romanian Literature and of the Iași International Festival of Literature and Translation that support contemporary creation and the international promotion of cultural heritage, contributing to the development of a broad system of literary residencies in Eastern Europe.

* The series Translators and Writers in Dialogue, co-organised by Ipotești Memorial – Mihai Eminescu National Center for Studies and Iași National Museum of Romanian Literature are part of the activities included in the UNESCO Programme Iași. City of Literature.
