The 11th edition of the “FILIT Workshops for Translators”, organized by the Iași National Museum of Romanian Literature in collaboration with the Ipotești Memorial – Mihai Eminescu National Centre for Studies, will take place between the 1st and the 7th of September 2025.
The workshops provide a constant framework for professional training and communication for translators of Romanian literature into foreign languages. Launched in 2015 in Ipotești, they are being held again in person since last year, after a period of several years (2020-2023) during which the meetings took place online.
The participants in this edition are Hristo Boev (Bulgaria), Rodica Ceterchi (Romania, English language), Jan Cornelius (Germany), Elena Florea (Romania, English language), Lavinia Ienceanu (Romania, Spanish language), Monica Moroșanu (Romania, English language), Edith Negulici (Romania, English language), Laura Rodríguez Díaz (Spain), Dominika Wojtaś-Myślińska (Poland), joined by residency alumna Anna Heinz (Germany).
Together with the guest lecturers, the translators will reflect on the interpretation and translation into different languages of classic and contemporary texts from Romanian literature and discuss strategies for promoting Romanian literature abroad in the context of todayʼs changing and challenging global world.
A work session coordinated by literary critic and lecturer PhD Doris Mironescu (“Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Iași, Faculty of Letters) will focus on translating Eminescuʼs poem Cugetările sărmanului Dionis. Writer Dan Sociu will approach the topic of translations made by fans, the role of automated translation and the importance of human expertise: “How has the digital era and increased global communication influenced the domain of literary translation?”. Bogdan Crețu (Professor PhD at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Iași, Faculty of Letters) proposes a debate on Nichita Stănescuʼs poem A șaptea elegie. Opțiunea la real, under the title “What can and cannot be translated?”.
This yearʼs Workshop program will include an online meeting in the series “Translators and Writers in Dialogue”, moderated by Monica Joița, Minister-Counsellor at the Diplomatic Archives of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The guests of the meeting will be the Norwegian translator Steinar Lone and writer Lavinia Braniște.
“FILIT Workshops for Translators” is one of the initiatives of the Iași National Museum of Romanian Literature and of the Iași International Festival of Literature and Translation – FILIT that support contemporary creation and the international promotion of cultural heritage, contributing to the development of a broad system of literary residencies in Eastern Europe.
